When Blessing came to one of my studio classes she wanted to work on her posture. Her shoulders and neck were extremely tight, and she had a bit of a hunchback. I totally agreed with her. But clearly, fixing your posture cannot be done in a single yoga session.

I think the biggest frustration is when we can’t go deep enough. A single private or group class often doesn’t allow enough space to go deeper and explain things further.

Most of my clients are professionals and their lifestyles take a serious toll on their physical well-being. We spend most sessions fixing necks, shoulders and backs, knees and hips.

After her last fix I asked a client how she felt. She said that she felt great, her neck better and her body more fluid. And then she stepped in front of her big mirror to take a closer look at herself. She then asked me what she could do in order to maintain her ‘new’ posture.

Unfortunately, a mirror doesn’t change your posture. A mirror helps you look at the surface. Your image may encourage you to suck in your belly or pull your shoulders back or tighten up your jaw. But this might actually prevent change.

Poor posture is often a reflection of our lifestyles. Good posture, however, reflects a balanced body, mind and breath.

In yoga we seek good posture and alignment. And these two aspects equally constitute the fourth pillar of the Chi’s Yoga Method™.
