I think the biggest frustration is when we can’t go deep enough. A single private or group class often doesn’t allow enough space to go deeper and explain things further.

When one of my male clients began his yoga practice in October 2014 his simple objective was to touch his toes. And I knew we had a long way to go. His body is strong but super tight and I have to use my full body weight to adjust most of his poses. He used to lift heavy weights, does high intensity training and other forms of work-out. Hence, we started to work on the flexibility of his spine, his lower back and the backs of his thighs (hamstrings).

Today he can touch his toes, his neck appears longer, and he sleeps better. In one of our last yoga classes I reminded him that it was about time to fire me. The desired objective was achieved and his personalized sequence allows him to progress even when I’m not around. But he replied: ‘I am just getting started.’

Most of my clients are stiff. They complain of stiff necks and shoulders, legs and lower backs. But, why do we get stiff?

Our bodies tighten in order to avoid or minimize an impact of pain. Muscles tense in readiness for combat or to flee danger. This is a natural mechanism. It is essential for survival and activated whenever we are under pressure – physically and/or emotionally.

In response to this crisis we need to relax – thoroughly. Problems may only arise if we don’t.

We can actually spend our whole lives in an unconscious and unnecessary state of tense alert. Perhaps you may notice symptoms such as overall fatigue? It is very tiring to hold the body in constant readiness for battle. And our stiff muscles forget how to fully relax.

I am usually a bit stiff in the lower back when I start my yoga practice. But by the time I get to the 3rd repetition of Sun Salutation A, movements are flowing and my back feels great!

Stretching helps the muscles to relax. It informs the brain that the emergency has passed. It re-educates the body out of habitually held stress-induced postures reminding it of what a healthy posture feels like.

A healthy muscle is strong and flexible. If your muscles are strong but tight, you lack range of motion. And as a result, your body feels stiff. But if you happen to be overstretched, you are hyper-mobile and can easily tear a muscle due to lack of strength. A physical imbalance caused by unhealthy muscles may lead to pain and injuries.

In yoga we seek strength and flexibility. And these two aspects equally constitute the second pillar of the Chi’s Yoga Method™.

If your back, abdominal muscles and legs are strong and flexible they support the weight-bearing on the joints. But if you have a physical imbalance, you may encounter difficulties. If your legs are weak, you may easily fall and injure your hips and create a hot spot for osteoarthritis and other inflammatory diseases.
