“Last summer I noticed a difference in my balance”, she says. “I wasn’t able to put my trousers on without holding on to something. And when I tripped I fell and broke a rib”, she continues.

My oldest client is 87, if I am not mistaken. Another one is 83 years old. And both complained about their balance.

I think the biggest frustration is when we can’t go deep enough. A single private or group class often doesn’t allow enough space to go deeper and explain things further.

I worked with an elderly person for a short period of time. He had some trouble with his balance. But he had also suffered from constipation for more than 20 years. We started our yoga practice by improving his balance and I gave him some advice on how to change his diet. At least for a week, I said, for him to notice a difference.

At one of our next appointments he refused to receive me. In fact, he told his wife that he didn’t want to continue his yoga practice with me. You can imagine how irritated I was. Especially since I thought we made progress.

Yes, we did make progress. And that was the problem. His wife told me that after we had started our yoga practice and he had changed his diet for about a week, he was purged. He had to use the bathroom every 5 minutes and couldn’t sleep all night. I was so excited! How else was his body supposed to get rid of all the toxins that had been stuck in his colon for years?
